The Legacy of Coffey Stills The Coffey still, the world’s first patented continuous still, was invented by Aeneas Coffey in 1830. Masataka Taketsuru learned to distill grain whisky using a Coffey still in Scotland in 1919. Appreciating its unique features, he installed two Coffey stills in Japan after establishing Nikka Whisky. The first still arrived from Scotland in 1963, followed by the second in 1966.
